Gastroesophageal irritation
Nutritional approach
Certain dietary and lifestyle changes may reduce symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux. This approach helps to relieve irritation in the digestive system caused by gastroesophageal reflux, a hiatal hernia, or an ulcer.
The following foods should be avoided:
- High-fat foods such as fried foods, meats, dairy products, and high-fat desserts
- Citrus fruits, tomatoes, and their derivatives (e.g., oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, tomato sauce, tomato paste)
- Spicy foods and spices such as black pepper, cayenne pepper, and chili
- Onions and garlic
- Foods and beverages containing caffeine (e.g., coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks)
- Peppermint and chocolate
- Alcohol
The following measures are recommended to help minimize discomfort:
- Eat and drink slowly
- Chew food thoroughly
- Avoid eating 2 hours before bedtime
- Eat light, balanced meals and avoid large meals
- Avoid foods that are very hot or very cold
- Avoid strenuous physical activity after meals
- Maintain a healthy body weight
