The Best Makeup Techniques for Beautiful Eyes
You have certainly noticed that not all eyes are shaped the same. They can be small, round, monolid, upturned or downturned . There’s quite a range! For a flawless look that highlights your natural beauty, adapt your makeup style to your eye shape and colour. Get all the tips below!
How to apply eye makeup to almond-shaped eyes
This eye shape resembles an almond with its tips slightly higher at the outer eye.
Your goal: To give your eyes more depth
- Apply a light shade of eyeshadow over the entire eyelid.
- Add a medium shade to the outer crease.
- Line the base of the lower lashes with a darker shade.
How to apply eye makeup to round eyes
Round eyes look big because they show more white around the iris.
Your goal: To make your eyes look longer
- Sweep a light eyeshadow colour across the lid.
- Apply a medium tone to the outer corners of the eye, close to where the upper and lower lashes come together.
- Get a stronger look by using a darker colour at the base of the upper lashes and moving the line outward.
How to apply eye makeup to monolid eyes
Monolid eyes appear to not have a lid or crease and the brow bones are often less defined.
Your goal: give your eyes shape and definition
- Apply a light shade of eyeshadow over the entire eyelid.
- Apply a medium shade just above the eyelid, from the inner corner to the outer corner.
- Define the look by highlighting the base of the lashes with a dark, matte colour.
How to apply eye makeup to upturned eyes
Upturned eyes have very visible lids. The outer corners are slightly lifted. It's the perfect shape for the smoky look!
Your goal: To create balance.
- Apply a light-coloured eyeshadow from the inner corner of the eye to the centre of the lid.
- Use a darker shade on the outer half of the eyelid.
- Accentuate the outer corner of the lash line from the top to the bottom with a darker shade.
How to apply eye makeup to downturned eyes
With downward-pointing outer corners, downturned eyes are particularly well suited to the cat-eye effect, which minimizes their sad look.
Your goal: To emphasize the corner of the eye
- Apply a light eyeshadow colour to the upper lid and inner corner of the eye.
- Enhance the outer corners by applying a darker shade in the crease, towards the outside of the eye.
- Highlight the eye with a dark, matte eyeshadow at the outer corner of the upper lash line.
How to apply eye makeup to bulging eyes
Bulging eyes protrude slightly from their sockets and typically have large eyelids.
Your goal: To give depth to your eyes
- Apply a darker shade of eyeshadow to the top eyelid only. Avoid going above the crease.
- Sweep a line of shadow along the lashes of your upper and lower lids. Using a pencil? Gently glide the tip of the pencil over the skin between the lashes and the eye, called the waterline.
- Blend to create a smoky effect.
A tip from the pro!
If you have bulging eyes, mascara is your best friend! Apply it while drawing your lashes outward (away from the nose) to give your eyes a more elongated look.
How to apply eye makeup to hooded eyes
It’s often more difficult to apply eye makeup to hooded eyes because of their droopy lids. Be very careful when you’re applying eyeshadow! Don’t pull too hard on the skin during application because the colours will not be in the right places when you release your eyelid.
Your goal: To make your eyes look bigger
- Apply a light shade of eyeshadow to the upper lid and under the brow bone.
- Apply a medium shade in the crease of the eyelid, in a slightly upward direction. Concentrate on the outer corner of the eye, but avoid overloading the lid with product.
- Finish your makeup with a dark, matte eyeshadow at the base of your lashes, lifting the colour upward.
Good to know!
It is important to blend the shadows together to prevent unsightly lines. If you are over 50, choose matte or satin eyeshadows. Iridescent, pearlescent, metallic and frosted eyeshadows highlight wrinkles and fine lines.
Choosing the right eyeshadow colours
Let the colour of your irises guide your colour selection. It's the best way to determine your eyeshadow palette!
- Green eyes? Go for purplish or copper shades.
- Blue eyes? Choose warm tones (brown, coral, yellow, gold, champagne, etc.).
- Hazel eyes? Use pastel colours to highlight the green and golden flecks in your irises. Metallic finishes will also make your eyes stand out.
- Brown eyes? The choice is yours! Salmon, bronze, olive, plum... You can be as colourful as you want!
