5 tips to boost your energy level
As winter progresses, especially in pandemic times when confined to our homes for months on end, you may find yourself feeling low in energy. Thankfully, there are simple ways to help you get out of this slump. Here are some tips to get you energized!
Fuel your body with quality food
A great way to boost your energy is to fuel your body with quality nutrients. Avoid processed foods and empty-calorie foods such as candy, chips, and soda. Instead, choose nutrient-dense foods that will keep you energised longer: whole grains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, lean meats and plant protein.
Dehydration often masks as fatigue, so make sure to drink plenty of water each day.
A vitamin supplement can be useful to complement your diet and help you maintain your energy level, especially if you have special needs due to your chosen diet (e.g. vegan diet) or a health condition (e.g. inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, low blood iron levels). Don’t hesitate to speak to a dietician or healthcare professional to help you choose the appropriate supplements to support your needs.
Avoid energy robbers
Certain habits can have a negative impact on your energy. Try to reduce them or avoid them.
Smoking is a stimulant that can lead to insomnia and leave you feeling tired all day. Consider quitting altogether, or at least cutting down on the number of cigarettes you smoke, especially in the evening.
Drink alcohol in moderation. While an alcoholic beverage can be a pleasant complement to a meal, too much alcohol can leave you feeling sluggish.
Delegate (yes, you can!)
Whether at home or at work, when responsibilities start to pile up, stress and overwork can become a huge energy drain. It’s important to set priorities and delegate whenever possible, to avoid burnout and a constant feeling of fatigue. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your family, colleagues, or a support group, as needed.
Yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques are also great ways to manage stress.
Keep moving
Exercise boosts your energy not just because it helps relieve stress, but also because it helps you sleep more soundly. It also increases blood oxygen and brain dopamine levels, which helps elevate mood.
So, when you feel sluggish, get moving! No need to commit to a new sport – walking is a simple and accessible way to exercise.
Improve your sleep
Sleep deprivation can not only drain your energy – it can also aggravate health conditions and negatively affect your mood. Try going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time each day, including the weekend. Also avoid stimulants before bed, such as caffeine in the evening or exposure to bright screens at night.
