Strict liquid diet
Nutritional approach
A strict liquid diet is used to allow your digestive tract to rest. It's often prescribed before or after surgery, before certain diagnostic procedures, and in the case of certain acute gastrointestinal problems.
This diet is limited to foods that are completely absorbed and that leave no residue in the intestines. It shouldn't be continued for more than a few days. You should aim to eat and drink small amounts at regular intervals throughout the day.
The list below outlines what you can have while on a strict liquid diet.
Acceptable foods | Examples |
---|---|
Clear liquids | Water or ice Consommés and clear, strained broths (no noodles, vegetables, or solid residues) |
Hot beverages, without cream, milk, or milk substitutes* | Tea, herbal tea, coffee |
Cold, clear, pulp-free beverages* (except red or purple kinds) | Apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice Gatorade or Kool-Aid 7UP, Sprite, ginger ale Iced tea |
Clear fruit gelatin (except red or purple kinds) | Jell-O |
Ice pops (except red or purple kinds) | Popsicles |
Nutritional drinks** (fibre-free and vanilla-flavoured only) | Ensure, Boost, Glucerna |
* Milk, juices with pulp, and prune juice should be avoided, as they produce residues.
