Directions for Use: Rectal Enemas

In certain cases, enemas are used to ensure that the drugs act locally. Enemas are also administered to empty the intestinal tract prior to a medical procedure. In either case, they are administered via the rectum and should be retained there as long as possible to maximize their effect. Follow these steps:

To make this procedure less uncomfortable, start by emptying your bladder and bowel, if possible. Uncap the enema bottle. Verify that the tip is lubricated. If the tip is not lubricated, apply a small amount of lubricant to it to make it easier to insert.

Squeeze the bottle gently to empty any air that it might contain. Lie on your left side and bring your right leg toward your chest. Breathe deeply and gently insert the bottle tip into your rectum, pointing it toward your navel.

Squeeze the bottle until it is completely empty. Remove it from the rectum and discard. Remain lying down to help retain the liquid as long as possible. Wait the prescribed amount of time before allowing the liquid to evacuate.
